Month of May

Nothing beats the high from that first cup of coffee in the morning. The old me would’ve had an eye roll moment for every time I’d heard something of that notion on an episode of Friends or Gilmore Girls, ‘people honestly hype coffee up- it doesn’t even taste that good!’ Yet here I am always delighted at the aroma that fills my home every morning, along with lingers of my husband’s cologne by the time he’s rushed off to work. I’ve often experienced and heard of how scent can produce memories, for me, it tends to be of my parents or one of the homes I grew up in. In old age years to come, coffee and cologne may just be the special smell that’ll carry me to moments in my first years in marriage, the savagery and reality of adult living and most importantly, the creative development in my path as an artist.

I’d written this post early in the middle of May only to fall ill and feel recovered enough to finally share it today: 31 May 22. The whole purpose as you’ll soon discover, was to encourage whoever reads this, not aware that the high I genuinely felt and pursued to keep was shortly lived. I know this is part of life but for goodness sake body, can I just thrive and not be under attack? If its not physical, its mental, its spiritual attacks. Lets learn to celebrate our days of good balance, that good day we’re experiencing, that little moment of peace and joy and breakthrough, that gift we don’t feel deserving of at the time- enjoy that because its not everyday we’ll get to. So let me leave you to read the original piece I’d had for you.

We arrived three weeks ago from chilly but sunny South Africa, after two cancelled wedding dates due to COVID, we finally celebrated with our extended families whom we hadn’t seen in years. As expected, the Autumn weather in South Africa was beautiful until our actual wedding weekend which poured throughout. As the saying goes, ‘showers of blessings’. From a woman living in showery Britain, I guess our blessings come down almost everyday then!

A few days back from our holiday I realized we were in May, of course when you’re on holiday in a warm country you’re never really prepared for life back at home but, Spring has sprung for real, even the white cherry blossoms outside our home are worn out yet they hadn’t flowered when we left three weeks before. Its amazing how much can happen in your absence in three weeks, still how much can happen while you’re present. I’ve started the month of May on an everyday quest to create art, whether that’s in my music, pottery or another avenue within my career paths. 2 May- ‘I will learn by creating, learn by making mistakes, learn until I’m confident‘. 5 May- I will: enjoy learning and be okay with my mistakes. As an art creator, this has helped me daily and I’ve noticed how better I am at my craft than I was a year ago. I’m noticing how present I am and aware of myself, my talents and need to progress, my passion and the happiness it serves me to continue living.

Dare to seek balance, dare to refresh your inner man- what you pour into yourself, you pour out to others so let it be nourishing.
